House approves patent reform bill

Last night the United States House of Representatives passed the America Invents Act, which is similar legislation to the Senate bill we wrote about here. The America Invents Act is another important step in creating a strong patent system that recognizes and rewards innovation benefiting all sectors of the national economy.

Why is it important for Congress to modernize the U.S. patent system?

A statement from The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America sums it up:

“Patent reform legislation offers the opportunity to stimulate the economy, encourage innovation, promote patent certainty and provide for a strong Patent and Trademark Office (PTO). We hope that the America Invents Act continues to move through the legislative process with strong momentum so that we see enacted this year a bill that accomplishes the goals of the biopharmaceutical sector and so many other research-based industries.”
