More patients receiving free AZ medicines in 2011

In January, we shared information about the number of patients who received their AstraZeneca medicines at no cost through the AZ&Me Prescription Savings Programs in 2010. As we pass the half-year mark for 2011, we thought you would be interested to see how the program is trending so far this year compared to the first half of 2010.

Program enrollment is up by 10 percent. During January 1 – June 30, 2011, nearly 420,000 patients received their AstraZeneca medicines through one of our three programs, compared to 382,000 patients enrolled during the same time period in 2010.

Prescriptions have increased by 20 percent. The total number of prescriptions for AstraZeneca medicines for patients using our programs increased from nearly 2 million to more than 2.3 million year over year.

Patient savings have increased by 27 percent. The amount of the savings to patients on the prescriptions they receive through our programs increased from just over $440 million to nearly $558.5 million.

With program enrollment and utilization trending up, we were not surprised to see that the number of visits to the prescription assistance section of our corporate web site also has increased significantly.

“Help Affording Your Medicines” is now the most popular section of our corporate website.  This section accounted for 42.5 percent of all traffic to the AstraZeneca-US corporate site during the first half of 2011.

Our experience indicates that as more people learn about our programs, more people sign up and use them.  We will continue to work with our partners across the safety net community to pursue new ways to raise awareness among eligible patients where and when they are seeking information about ways to better afford their medicines.
